There is a specific kind of friendship that only forms at 6am in an empty gym. You have suffered through the same suicides, celebrated the same buzzer-beaters, and seen each other at your absolute worst — gassed, frustrated, ready to quit — and stayed anyway. That is the Summitview bond, and alumni describe it decades later with total clarity.
Psychologists would call it shared adversity. Our players call it the bus. Something about long rides to away games — the playlists, the pregame nerves, the fast-food stops on the way home — compresses a season of acquaintance into genuine closeness. Ask any varsity parent: the group chat outlives the roster by years.
Built beyond the roster
We design for it deliberately. Mixed-age open gyms, cross-squad community service days, and the annual alumni game all widen the circle beyond one team. Younger players inherit mentors; older ones learn to lead. By senior year, most of our athletes can name a Summitview friend from every zip code in Denver.
The basketball ends for everyone eventually. The group chat, the weddings, the pickup runs every Thanksgiving — that is the real trophy case.
